Growing in an orphanage is never an easy thing. Especially when said orphanage is specifically made for child prodigies, the best of which will one day take over for the Greatest Detective in the World, L. Even worse, when you're second only to the most placid, indifferent child there.
That was Mello's life growing up: studying to futilely beat his rival Near at anything - anything, goddamnit! - kicking ass at soccer, and kicking other kids' asses when they pissed him off. Which was a pretty common thing, with all that pent-up frustration towards Near not being able to get out any other way.
At the death of his role model, L, Mello was finally pushed off the edge. He up and left the orphanage at the age of 15, gradually making his way to the United States to hunt down L's killer, Kira. There he fell in with the mob, and by working his way up the ladder (by whatever means necessary) he gained enough of a following by the age of nineteen to go after Kira. Through some rather cunning maneouvers he managed to steal the Death Note from the police force in Japan, the NPA, something even Near hadn't yet accomplished...
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end, and the very last thing he can remember is being ambushed by the NPA, and pushing that button to detonate the explosives....
Stuff Mello has: Rosary beads, knife, gun, gas mask, 20 aspirin, 10 antibiotics, lots of rum, lots of cocaine, a tachikoma, half a pencil and one page of Shidou's Death Note.
